We’ve all been there—counting down to a special event, every detail planned to perfection. I’m Malory Boston, the visionary behind Wiwiri, and like many of you, I’ve experienced the frustration of trying to find a hairstylist who truly understands black hair. On one particular occasion, I’d secured a makeup artist, picked the perfect outfit, and booked a hairstylist through a Facebook group. But just a day before the event, the hairstylist canceled. Panic set in, and I was left scrambling.
Despite all my efforts, I couldn’t find a replacement in time and ended up improvising my hairstyle at the last minute. This wasn’t just disappointing—it underscored a bigger issue that so many of us face: the struggle to find stylists who genuinely know how to care for black and curly hair.
Most salons in the Netherlands cater primarily to European hair types, leaving those of us with black or curly hair in a tough spot. Our hair needs specialized care from stylists who have the right skills and knowledge. Yet, these talented stylists are often independent, home-based, mobile, or working out of small rented spaces. They rely on word of mouth or social media to reach clients, often without a clear schedule, transparent pricing, or a detailed portfolio. This makes booking a hair appointment more uncertain than it should be.
This experience sparked the creation of WiwiriApp—a platform designed to connect individuals with black and curly hair to skilled hairstylists who truly understand our hair. But we didn’t stop there. Recognizing the broader needs within the beauty industry, WiwiriApp also serves as a hub for a variety of beauty professionals, including nail artists, makeup artists, waxing specialists, estheticians, and more.
